Discipline and Code of Conduct

The policy provides examples of areas of unacceptable behavior subject to disciplinary action, as well as outlines the disciplinary actions that may be taken.

Stillwater Area Public Schools is committed to creating a safe, supportive, equitable, and respectful learning environment where all students can learn and thrive. Positive discipline focuses on helping students develop self-direction, responsibility, sound decision-making, and respect for themselves, others, and school property.

Students have the right to learn in a safe and orderly environment and to fair and consistent disciplinary procedures. Students are expected to follow school rules, demonstrate respectful behavior, and contribute positively to the school community.

When student behavior does not meet district expectations, disciplinary responses are designed to be fair, reasonable, and consistent while considering the individual circumstances of each situation. Discipline may apply to conduct occurring at school, on district property, on school transportation, at school-sponsored activities, at school bus stops, while traveling to or from school, and to electronic communications or other off-campus conduct when permitted by law and district policy.

Parents and guardians will receive all notices and procedural information required by the Minnesota Pupil Fair Dismissal Act, including information regarding available legal assistance and advocacy resources when required by law.

A parent/guardian does have the ability to appeal a discipline decision under Minnesota Statutes, section 121A.49 and can do so by submitting the Discipline Complaint Form.
